SKETCH SERIES 3B – LIGHT AND SUBJECTIVE IMPRESSIONS

Peripheral lighting
This space without natural lighting has an almost eerie, uncomfortable feeling due to all of the shadows of objects in the next room over.

Nonuniform lighting

This lighting makes the space feel complex and very bright. The warmth from one light source is warm and inviting white the cooler LED lighting is great for reading or doing assignments.

Book comparison:
There were some similarities between what Flynn observed and what I observed but there were also some differences, but perhaps it was due to the intensity of light sources. One example of some similar observations would be with the nonuniform lighting. Both Flynn and I perceived this type of lighting to be interesting and complex and also pleasant and clear. Some differences between Flynn and I's observations are about dim perimeter lighting. Flynn said this type of lighting made the space feel large, uncluttered, and spacious while I felt that it made the room feel cramped and small. This could just be due to the size of the room that I was observing but it also may be that this type of lighting feels cozy and I connect a cozy space with a room that is small.

I was shocked to see how much of a difference different types of lighting affect the color of the fabric. I also found it interesting that 3 of the 4 lighting choices I chose were warm lighting but still had fairly drastic differences on the way the fabric appeared. The C9 lights seemed to almost completely change the color of the fabric all together, giving everything a red hue.

Sketch Series 2 (2.9.22)

The current lighting in my living room and the position of the sun in the sky does correspond to the solar chart that shows the sun's path around my apartment. During this time of day, 2:58 pm, there is enough light to read and sketch by and this is typically the case throughout the day until around 5:00 pm which is usually the time I turn on a lamp or overhead lighting. Using a lamp and overhead lighting is usually adequate but casts shadows making sketching a little more difficult. While there are blinds to help diffuse light, they are currently pulled up so there is nothing blocking any light. There is a while blanket draped over the sofa which reflects light and sometimes feels like it's "glowing" because of how bright it is. On the other hand, the carpet and tv are pretty dark and seem to absorb light. I think that during the early part of the day, having my back to the window and allowing the sun to directly hit the paper would improve my experience and eliminate shadows that seem to get in the way.
